VA Gives 2nd Chance for Veterans to Claim their COVID Relief Payments

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced veterans who did not receive their coronavirus pandemic stimulus check have a second chance to claim their relief payments. The IRS announced on August 14, 2020 it would reopen the registration period for federal beneficiaries who did not receive the $500 per payments they were entitled earlier this year. Potential recipients eligible for the Economic Impact Payments include people with qualifying children who receive Social Security retirement benefits, survivor of disability benefits, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Railroad Retirement benefits and Veterans Affairs Compensation and Pension (C&P) benefits and did not file a tax return in 2018 or 2019.

Government officials warn that as many as 2 million veterans could miss out on their stimulus checks. The IRS uses information from previous tax returns to determine income, direct deposit information, and addresses to deliver payments. It has also coordinated with community-based organizations and to get checks to qualified veterans. Veterans with a taxable income lower than $75,000 and who are not claimed as a dependent are qualified for payments of about $1,200 from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Secures (CARES) Act. The VA has worked with the IRS to identify veterans who may have been eligible to receive stimulus money. IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig stated the IRS would allocate additional IRS resources “to ensure eligible recipients receive their full payments during this challenging time.”

The IRS has struggled to get stimulus checks to veterans whose address and bank account information was not up to date. Some veterans do not file annual taxes, making it difficult for the IRS to deliver their stimulus checks. The lack of updated information like outdated addresses or bank account information has also contributed to veterans not receiving their relief checks.

Eligible Americans have until September 30, 2020 to register. Beneficiaries who miss the deadline will need to claim it next year to claim it as a credit on their 2020 federal income tax return. Persons who have already used the Non-filers tool website to provide information on qualifying children are not required to take further action.  Beneficiaries can expect to receive their stimulus payments by mid-October.

The IRS recommends recipients visit the IRS website to enter information on their qualifying children to receive supplemental $500 payments. Non-filers can use the website if they do not intend to file a federal income tax return for 2019. This may be due to having an income of less than $12,200; being married and filing together if your income is less than $24,400; or if you have no income.

You can find the status of your Economic Impact payment at the website https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/get-my-payment by using the Get MY Payment tool. You will also receive a notice verifying the $500-per-child supplement payment will be sent.
